Supporting Female Athletes

At boobydoo, we're commited to delivering elite-level breast health & sports bra education, expert fittings and the right sports bras for the individual - helping athletes train harder, perform stronger and compete with confidence.

Sports Bras for Professionals

Why it matters?

The right sports bra can enhance running efficiency, improve posture, reduce perceived exertion and significantly boost confidence and performance. When athletes feel supported, they’re able to focus fully on technique and speed rather than discomfort or distraction. Proper support can also help minimise breast movement, which is linked to reduced risk of pain and long-term tissue damage.

We currently partner with professional football, rugby and performance teams to ensure every player receives the correct support for comfort, performance and injury prevention. Our fitting approach is grounded in education, evidence and individual athlete needs, so every woman can train and compete with confidence.

Because every athlete deserves to move freely, feel supported, and perform at their best.

The Facts &
Figures

A study completed in 2022 by The National Library of Medicine, shows increasing levels of breast support were associated with reductions in peak knee flexion and peak knee valgus angles as well as reduction in peak knee valgus movement.

The study also found increasing levels of breast support were associated with greater trunk flexion angles at initial contact and greater peak trunk flexion angles.

Lower levels of breast support are associated with knee joint and trunk biomechanical profiles suggested to increase ACL injury risk.

A new study in Frontiers in Sports and Active Living found that greater breast support during running is associated with increased knee joint stiffness, altering the lower body biomechanics of female runners. Specifically, a low support bra was associated with a 2% increase in knee joint stiffness, and a high support bra with 5%.

Overall, a well-designed sports bra could increase a female’s running performance by 7%.

The right sports bra can increase your running performance by 7%.

Research from the University of Portsmouth (Prof. Joanna Wakefield-Scurr and colleagues). Reported in Portsmouth’s Research Group in Breast Health and summarised in media/industry pieces, shows that poorly controlled breast movement and inadequate breast support can shorten running stride by about 4 cm (per step), which commentators note would add up to roughly an extra mile over a marathon.

A study into Contact Breast Injuries Among Female Athletes: A systematic review shows that despite the frequent occurrence of CBIs among female athletes, reporting and treatment remains low. Awareness and education of all stakeholders are fundamental to ensuring better breast safety in female sport. Identifying the mechanics, severity and risk factors of CBIs through thorough injury surveillance must be a focus of further research.
