Sports Bras in Emergency Services and Military Roles
Why it matters:
Whether in the police, fire and rescue services, ambulance/first aid teams, or the armed forces, physically demanding, high-pressure work is routine. Yet, for many women in uniform, breast support is often overlooked.
Personnel working in emergency services and military settings often face unpredictable, high-impact, or physically demanding tasks.
Activities such as running, lifting, crawling, and working in body armour or heavy gear can result in discomfort and reduced performance if breast support is inadequate.

Case Studies, Press & Projects
A 2019 pilot study by the UK Ministry of Defence & University of Portsmouth assessed the impact of a professional sports bra fitting and issue service during basic training (BT) at the Army Training Centre, Pirbright.
The findings from the study support the conclusion that professional fitting and appropriate bra design can positively impact comfort, movement control, and uniform integration during physically demanding occupational tasks.
boobydoo were the facilitators of the sports bra fit and issue for this study, and went on to be the formal supplier for all future contracts.

For female firefighters, paramedics, and police officers, the right kit starts from the first layer. A well-fitted sports bra can be the difference between comfort and distraction on long, physically demanding shifts.
At a recent session at The Emergency Services Show, Charly Rhodes, Director of sports bra specialist boobydoo, and Jenny Burbage, Associate Professor in Applied Biomechanics at the University of Portsmouth, highlighted a gap in understanding about breast health for women in operational roles and what solutions are on offer for organisations to make impactful change.

The British Army is to offer all eligible personnel £50 a year towards the cost of a sports bra, which can be claimed via expenses.
An Army Briefing Note (ABN) outlined: "The intent and provision behind this announcement is to provide a mechanism through which the Army can contribute on an annual basis up to £50, to the cost of sports bras."
